Is there a difference between the sexes?

The Gallery Diva

Brett Whysel, one of our talented NY photographers came by last week and while we chatted he asked “Do more men or women buy the art”, which set off a major discussion about who buys art and why.

Collette Dunkley, founder of XandY Communications, a strategic communications company that apply gender intelligence to business practices, wrote in themarketer recently that gender psychology should be an important consideration for businesses.  She states that it wasn’t long ago when men were the main buyers, but that today, women influence 80% of consumer decisions. She quotes the New Scientist magazine which reported that recent studies of the human brain show that neurological and chemical differences between men and women affect behavior.

Women’s sensory perception levels are higher on all five counts, so they are more sensitive to sales behavior and physical environments, asserts Dunkley.  Women also apparently use the internet and shop online differently and most importantly, she points out that women talk more about good and bad experiences, so word of mouth and referral rates are higher.  Yet when asked, women say that many industries still don’t understand them or provide a good customer experience.

A review of Monkdogz Urban Art’s clients show an amazingly even distribution of genders:  36% women                        36% men                    28% couples

Between Bob, Sebastien and I maybe we manage to cover all the basic food groups?!

What makes you buy art and why?
